With the growth of internet technology and social media, the food and drink industry are seeing customers who’s dining and purchase habits are heavily influenced by online connectivity. Through internet platforms such as search engines and social media, today’s customers are driven by online search first prior to their decision making of where to dine and unwind with a drink.

“In terms of being visible through search engines and having a solid digital presence on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, today’s local caterers and restaurants are opening up new opportunities in being discovered and referred through social media,” Mechelle Manlunas said. “Today, restaurants get a lot of exposure from social sharing and social recommendations from their friends. Getting a good referral is no longer limited to word of mouth; social media is a big factor in getting customers to frequently dine in your establishment.”

“Social media is a key ingredient in the success of restaurants and culinary businesses here in the Philippines,” said Angela Sunga. “Having a constant and consistent social media presence is now considered essential in the competitive diversity of the food and dining industry.” Exposure in social media allows bars, cafes, caterers and restaurants allow for customer discovery, customer engagement and getting referrals through social media. Today’s customers are using online or social first to find a new place to dine. They love to take photos and share the moments in social media. The restaurant also gets exposure to a customer’s trusted social connection consisting of family, friends and their workmates.

In creating a holistic digital and online presence, a business which is identified in the food / drinks industry must have a website that is capable of social media cross-functionality. Functions such as social media buttons, where website visitors can easily connect to the business’ social media accounts and having the ability to feature content from social media are displayed on the website. Such cross-functionality combines brand rapport that is solidified by the website and allow for social capabilities.

Through e-commerce functionalities, food manufacturers and distributors are able to sell their products online. Customers are able to shop, select, purchase and have these delectable goods be delivered. Online purchase effectively enhances the brand’s sales avenue.
